Be the Star of the Job Fair

fairIf you haven’t had to look for a job in a number of years (or ever), the thought of attending a job fair can make your palms sweat. What do I wear? What do I say? What should I take with me? With a little preparation and the proper attitude, you’ll make a great impression and walk away with solid connections — and perhaps a job offer!

The Day of the Job Fair

For the Pinch Hitters

What if you find out about the job fair two hours before you need to be there? No problem! Although it’s a better idea to do a little prep beforehand, with the right approach and attitude, you can turn any opportunity into a winning proposition.

If you don’t know who’s going to be at the job fair, make plans to stop at every booth there. Just because the company isn’t what you want doesn’t mean they aren’t hiring your qualifications. For instance, a restaurant hires IT staff, HR directors, and marketing professionals, in addition to servers. If you don’t ask, you’ll never know.

You don’t have to have a resume to go to a job fair. In fact, you might do better to not have one, especially if you’ve not been able to do research on companies in attendance and tailor your resume appropriately. Instead of passing out your credentials willy-nilly, collect the business cards of the people you meet. Ask them how they prefer to receive applications (which will usually be online), and then let them know you’ll be following up with them when you apply. You’ll stand out from the crowd when you follow up directly.
