No matter how prepared you think you are for an interview, it doesn’t hurt to double and triple check you’re ready. You only get one shot to show off your full potential with this company. Be prepared to maximize the opportunity. I have put together a list of my favorite tips to help you land your next interview.
- Dress Like You Want The Job– Today’s culture of being casual does not give you permission to be casually dressed for an interview. Hiring managers want to see you take the opportunity seriously. Showing up dressed casually will appear you are casually interested in the position.
- Non-verbal Communication- We’ve all head the stats about how much communication is actually non-verbal. Remember this from the moment you get out of your car, to the moment you get back in your car. Smile like you mean it, be polite with everyone you come across. I recently had an interview with a candidate who walked in our office with a bit of an attitude. I happened to be picking up some paperwork at the front desk and she thought I was just working the front reception. She proceeded to show an quick attitude about having an interview Ryan (Me) and if I could go get him and tell him she was there. When I mentioned I was Ryan, the attitude flipped to a big smile and said “Oh Hi, it’s soooo good to meet you.” It was very hard to take her seriously throughout the interview because I kept imagining that attitude she might show with my clients. You never know. ALWAYS show positivity.
- Enthusiasm- Oh how I wish I could show everyone how important this is. An employer LOVES someone assertive and happy to be there. Employers I have worked with have shared the painful stories of sleepy candidates. You know the type.
- Want The Job- Too many times candidates seem disenchanted about the opportunity I am presenting to them. It makes me feel like they aren’t going to be excited to work with me, which results in not getting the job offer.
- Use Professionals Language- it’s a given that you should use professional language during the interview. Be aware of any inappropriate slang words or references to age, race, religion, politics or sexual orientation — these topics could send you out the door very quickly.
When in doubt, smile and be happy to be in the door. Nothing can replace the power of showing a positive attitude that is willing to do hard work and be a contributor. If you are looking for jobs in Phoenix, be sure to reach out with our team, we love to help any way we can.
